Welcome to the Waves

July 21, 2025

Welcome to the first in a series of articles on topics of (we hope) interest to aquatic facility managers, operators, and owners, lifeguards, lifeguard instructors, and anyone else involved in promoting drowning prevention and water safety.

Wavecrest Aquatics was founded because we fundamentally believe that attention to detail, and being proactive rather than reactive, is a key tactic in preparing your facility for the occurrence of a major incident. While the staff in many organizations think that it cannot happen to them, the truth is, it is more a case of when, not if, an incident will occur. Concern over "unnecessary" expenses are pervasive in an industry where trying to balance the books is the bottom line. If something is not legally mandated (or required by your insurers), then it is frequently seen as an extra line item, and the first thing to be cut from the budget when things do not balance.

In the end, however, all this train of thought results in is a delayed and compounded cost. Spending an extra $5,000 a year on training can sound extravagant when you are not expected to break even in a given season. When a major incident occurs, however, that extra money and time spent on training may be the difference between your facility being praised for a professional response versus facing legal expenses (lawyers fees and potential judgments) that run 10 times higher or more, depending on jurisdiction.

Wavecrest Aquatics exists to help organizations prepare for the foreseeable incidents no one ever wants to face. The courses we teach, and the services we can offer, are all oriented to preventing drownings and other water-related emergencies where possible and preparing you and your staff to respond appropriately when prevention is not possible.

Thank you for joining us on our journey towards a drowning free future in Manitoba and Canada. We hope you stick around with us for the full ride.

Christopher Love
